Thymōl

Thymōl (Thymiankampfer, Methylpropylphenol) C10H14O oder C6H3.CH3.C3H7.OH findet sich neben Kohlenwasserstoffen im ätherischen Thymianöl, im Ajowanöl (s. Carum) und in einigen andern ätherischen Ölen und wird aus den beiden erstern durch starke Abkühlung gewonnen, wobei das T. kristallisiert; man kann auch die Öle mit Natronlauge schütteln und die von den Kohlenwasserstoffen getrennte wässerige Lösung von Thymolnatrium mit Salzsäure übersättigen. T. bildet farblose Kristalle, riecht thymianähnlich, schmeckt brennend gewürzhaft, ist leicht löslich in Alkohol und Äther, auch in Natronlauge, schwer in Wasser, schmilzt bei 50°, siedet bei 228° und wird aus seiner Lösung in wässerigen Alkalien durch Kohlensäure abgeschieden. T. hemmt das Wachstum der Spaltpilze energischer als Karbolsäure (scheint Sporen nicht zu töten), wirkt nicht ätzend und weniger giftig. Man benutzt es als geruchverdeckendes Mittel bei jauchigen Geschwüren, zu Mundwässern und gegen Eingeweidewürmer (Bandwurm, Anchylostemum). T. ist der wirksame Bestandteil im Pertussin (s. d.). Über Dithymoldijodid s. Aristol. Thymotal, aus Thymolnatrium und Phosgen erhalten, bildet sehr schwach riechende Kristalle, belästigt nicht den Magen, wird erst im Darm wirksam und besitzt als Wurmmittel besonders bei Kindern Vorzüge vor T. Man benutzt T. auch als Konservierungsmittel und zur Herstellung anatomischer Präparate. Vgl. Ranke, Über das T. (Leipz. 1878).
