Subiáco

Subiáco (das röm. Sublaqueum, d. h. »unterhalb der Seen« Neros), Stadt in der ital. Provinz und dem Kreise Rom, 408 m ü. M., in den Sabinerbergen, am rechten Ufer des Aniene (Teverone), an der Eisenbahn Mandela-S. höchst romantisch gelegen, daher viel besucht und beliebter Sommeraufenthalt, hat Ruinen einer großen Villa Neros, eine Burg Gregors VII., einen dem Papst Pius VI. 1789 errichteten Triumphbogen, ein hochgelegenes Schloß des Kommendatarabtes (1068), ein Seminar, eine Bibliothek, Fabrikation von Hüten, Leder, Töpferwaren, Papier etc. und (1901) 7082 (als Gemeinde 8005) Einw. Die Umgebung von S. ist die Wiege des Benediktinerordens und enthält noch zwei schon im 6. Jahrh. gestiftete Klöster: Santa Scolastica und Sacro Speco (oder San Benedetto) mit der Felsengrotte, in die sich St. Benedikt zurückzog. Im erstgenannten Kloster stellten die deutschen Buchdrucker Sweynheym und Pannartz 1465–67 die ersten in Italien gedruckten Bücher her. Vgl. Gregorovius, Lateinische Sommer (8.
