Stubbs (spr. ßtöbbs), William, engl. Geschichtschreiber, geb. 21. Juni 1825 zu Knaresborough in Essex, gest. 24. April 1901, studierte in Oxford, wurde 1848 Geistlicher, 1862 Bibliothekar zu Lambeth, 1866 Professor der neuern Geschichte zu Oxford und 1869 Kurator der Bodleyanischen Bibliothek daselbst. 1875 erhielt er das Rektorat zu Cholderton, ward 1879 Kanonikus der Paulskirche, 1884 Bischof von Chester und 1889 von Oxford. Abgesehen von einer großen Anzahl meist mustergültiger Ausgaben mittelalterlicher Chroniken und Urkunden, hat er sich besonders durch seine ausgezeichnete »Constitutional history of England« (Oxf. 1874–78, 3 Bde.; 5. Aufl. 1896) bedeutende Verdienste erworben. Außerdem veröffentlichte er »Select charters and other illustrations ot English history« (Lond. 1870, 8. Aufl. 1895); »Lectures on the study of mediaeval and modern history« (das. 1886, 2. Aufl. 1896); »Charles Kingsley and the social movement« (das. 1899); »Pro patria. Sermons on special occasions in England and America« (das. 1900). Seine »Lectures on European history, 1519–1648« (das. 1904) und »Lectures on early English history« (das. 1906) gab A.
