Stedman

Stedman (spr. ßtéddmän), Edmund Clarence, amerikan. Schriftsteller, geb. 8. Okt. 1833 zu Hartford (Connecticut), studierte im Yale College, war dann in New York journalistisch tätig und wurde 1869 Mitglied der New Yorker Börse. welche Stellung er erst 1900 niederlegte. Auf seinen ersten Gedichtband »Poems, lyric and idyllic« (1860) folgten die Dichtungen »Alice of Monmouth« (1863) und »The blameless prince« (1869) und dann die Sammlung »Poetical works« (1875). In den nächsten Jahren veröffentlichte er »Hawthorne and other poems« (1877), »Lyrics and idylls« (1879), »Poems« (Household Edition, 1884) und schließlich »Poems now first collected« (1897). Inzwischen hatte S. eine Reihe literarhistorischer und kritischer Werke von hoher Bedeutung verfaßt: »Victorian poets« (13. Aufl., Boston 1887), »Poets of America« (1885), »The nature and elements of poetry« (1892), »A Victorian anthology« (1895) und »An American anthology« (1900). Außerdem gab er mit Ellen M. Hutchinson die »Library of American literature« (1888–90, 11 Bde.), mit George E. Woodberry eine Gesamtausgabe der Werke Poes (1895) heraus.
