Stead

Stead (spr. ßtedd), William Thomas, engl. Journalist, geb. 5. Juli 1849 in Howdon-on-Tyne, widmete sich der schriftstellerischen Laufbahn und gehörte 1880–89 der Redaktion der »Pall Mall Gazette« an. 1890 gründete er die »Review of Reviews« und 1891 und 1894 ähnliche Zeitschriften für Amerika und Australien. 1898 machte er eine Reise nach Rußland, ward von dem Kaiser empfangen und widmete sich seitdem mit rastlosem Eifer der Friedensbewegung, für die er durch Wort und Schrift in aller Welt zu wirken suchte. Während der Friedenskonferenz von 1899 hielt er sich im Haag auf; gegen den südafrikanischen Krieg agitierte er in England aufs lebhafteste und zog sich dadurch viel Feindschaft zu. In den letzten Jahren bemühte er sich besonders um den Ausgleich der Gegensätze zwischen Deutschland und England und um die Vorbereitung der zweiten Friedenskonferenz, während deren er sich abermals nach dem Haag begab und einen »Courrier de la Conférence de la Paix« herausgab. Außer zahlreichen kleinern Broschüren politischen und wissenschaftlichen Inhalts schrieb er unter anderm: »The truth about Russia« (Lond. 1888); »Character sketches« (1891); »Her majesty the Queen« (1897); »Belestus, the king's chamberlain. A political romance« (neue Ausg. 1898); »The united states of Europe on the eve of the parliament of peace« (1899); »Real ghost stories« (neue Ausg. 1905); »Le parlement de l'humanité (Conférence de la Paix à la Haye 1907).
