Simonstown

Simonstown (spr. ßaimonstaun), Hafenstadt der britisch-südafrikan. Kapkolonie, an der Simonsbai (Abzweigung der Falschen Bai), Endpunkt einer von Kapstadt (32 km) ausgehenden Bahn, mit (1891) 3600 Einw., darunter etwa 1400 Farbige. Die befestigte Stadt ist Marinestation des britischen Geschwaders für Südafrika und die Westküste Afrikas, mit großer Schiffswerft und Seearsenal, Militär- und Marinehospital. Wenn der Hafen von Kapstadt nicht genügend Sicherheit bietet, suchen ihn auch Handelsschiffe auf. Es liefen 1903: 24 Schiffe mit 60,688 Ton. ein und 23 Schiffe mit 67,170 T. aus.
