Sell, 1) Christian, Maler, geb. 14. Aug. 1831 in Altona, gest. 21. April 1883 in Düsseldorf, lebte seit 1851 in Düsseldorf, wo er bis 1856 die Akademie besuchte, machte Studienreisen durch Deutschland und Belgien und malte anfangs Kriegsszenen aus dem 17. Jahrh. Nach seiner Teilnahme an den Kriegen 1864, 1866 und 1870 stellte er größere Schlachten und kleinere Episoden aus diesen drei Kriegen dar, z. B.: Erstürmung der Düppeler Schanze 6, Schlacht bei Königgrätz, der Beginn der Verfolgung bei Königgrätz (Berliner Nationalgalerie).

2) Karl, prot. Theolog, geb. 29. Nov. 1845 in Gießen, war 1875–82 Pfarrer, 1882–91 Oberkonsistorialrat und Superintendent in Darmstadt und wurde 1891 ordentlicher Professor in Bonn. Von seinen Schriften erwähnen wir: »Die geschichtliche Entwickelung der Kirche im 19. Jahrhundert« (Gieß. 1887); »Aus der Geschichte des Christentums« (2. Aufl., Darmst. 1895); »Philipp Melanchthon und die deutsche Reformation bis 1531« (Halle 1897); »Die Entwickelung der katholischen Kirche im 19. Jahrhunderts« (das. 1907).
