Bastiōn

Bastiōn, ursprünglich ein Pfahlwerk (Bollwerk) für die Belagerung oder Verteidigung eines Platzes; dann ein von der Umwallung einer Festung vorspringender Teil, der aus zwei nach dem Feld zu gerichteten Walllinien, den Facen, und zwei zur Flankierung der Nachbarbastionen und des Zwischenwalls bestimmten Flanken besteht. Erstere stoßen in einem selten unter 60° betragenden ausspringenden Winkel (Saillant, Bastionswinkel) zusammen. An die Facen setzen sich die Flanken mit einem stumpfen Winkel (Schulterwinkel) im Schulterpunktan. Das andre Ende der Flanken schließt sich mittels eines eingehenden Winkels an den Zwischenwall oder die Kurtine an, die je zwei Bastione miteinander verbindet. Flanke und Kurtine stoßen im Kurtinenpunkt zusammen. Die Verlängerung der Facen nach rückwärts auf den gegenüberstehenden Kurtinenpunkt heißt die Defenslinie, die hintere offene Seite eines Bastions Kehle. Ist der innere Raum eines Bastions mit Erde ausgefüllt, so ist es ein volles, andernfalls ein hohles; ist es durch einen schmalen Graben von den hintern Werken getrennt, ein detachiertes B.; halbe Bastione haben nur eine Face und eine Flanke, die andre Hälfte fehlt ganz.
