Baste

Baste, ägypt. Göttin der Freude, von den Griechen Bubastis genannt und mit Artemis identifiziert. Sie wurde in der Stadt Bast (griech. Bubastis, s. d.), von der sie auch den Namen hat (B., d. h. die von Bast), verehrt; hier wurde ihr alljährlich ein großes Fest unter den ausgelassensten Lustbarkeiten gefeiert, zu denen Hunderttausende von Menschen zusammenströmten. Ihr waren die Katzen heilig, deren Leichen nach Bubastis gebracht und beigesetzt wurden (s. Bubastis). Dargestellt wurde B. als Frau mit Katzenkopf und einer Sonnenscheibe darüber, in den Händen einen Korb und ein Sistrum (s. d.) oder das den Göttinnen eigentümliche Blumenzepter haltend. Verschieden von ihr, aber oft mit ihr zusammengeworfen die löwenköpfige Sechmet (s. d.) und die in Speos Artemidos verehrte Pecht (s. d.).
