Rockall

Rockall (spr. rock-aol), Felseneiland im Atlantischen Ozean, 416 km nördlich von Irland, etwa 300 km von der Hebrideninsel St. Kilda, unter 57°36´ nördl. Br. und 13°14´ westl. L., erhebt sich als steiler, 21 m hoher und nur 90 m im Umfang messender Kegel auf einer 180 m unter dem Meeresspiegel liegenden Bank, die von N. nach S. 160, von O. nach W. 80 km mißt und von Großbritannien durch ein über 2000 m tiefes Meer getrennt wird (vgl. Atlantischer Ozean, S. 45, nebst zugehöriger Karte der Tiefenverhältnisse). Erst seit 1860 gehört R. seiner reichen Fischgründe (Makrelen) wegen politisch zu England. Der sehr schwierigen Landungsverhältnisse wegen haben erst zwei Expeditionen (1810 und 1862) den Felsen untersuchen können. Auf der unterseeischen Bank befinden sich Lager von Muscheln und Fischknochen von ungeheurer Mächtigkeit, die sich nur auf einer nicht vom Meer bedeckten Küste gebildet haben können, so daß also damit eine Senkung der Landmasse erwiesen ist.
