Raiatea

Raiatea (Ulietea), eine der franz. Gesellschaftsinseln (seit 1887) im Stillen Ozean unter 16°44' südl. Br. und 151°26' westl. L., 194 qkm groß, mit dem nahen Tahaa (82 qkm) von einem Korallenriff mit einigen Pässen umgeben, mit guten Häfen, bis 1033 m hoch, hat einen fruchtbaren Küstenrand und (1897) 2138 mit den Tahitiern verwandte christliche Einwohner. Auf der Nordostküste Tawarna (Teavarua), dessen Handel fast ganz in deutschen Händen ist, mit Faktorei der Société commerciale de l'Océanie. Die Insel wurde 1769 von Cook entdeckt. Vgl.
