Purbeck

Purbeck (Isle of P.), Halbinsel an der Küste von Dorsetshire (England), im N. vom Hafen Poole begrenzt, war früher ein königlicher Forst und ist in geologischer Hinsicht interessant, indem ein Teil der Oolithenformation nach ihr benannt ist. Die Halbinsel ist 19 km lang, 12 km breit, hat teilweise steile Küsten und steigt im Innern bis 220 m an. Auf ihr liegen die Städtchen Corse-Castle (s. d.) und Swanage und das Dorf Kimmeridge. Die Einwohnerzahl beläuft sich auf 6000. Vorzügliche Bausteine und Marmor werden gewonnen.
