Protococcus

Protococcus Ag. (Kugelalge, Urkornalge), einstmalige Algengattung, die Formen von sehr ungleicher Entwickelung enthält. Gegenwärtig werden dieselben als Protokokkoideen (Protococcales) zu einer Unterabteilung der Grünalgen (Chlorophyzeen, s. Algen 4) zusammengefaßt, deren Verhältnisse noch vielfach der Aufklärung bedürfen. Bei der Familie der Protokokkazeen fehlt die vegetative Zellteilung, die Vermehrung findet durch Schwärmsporen und durch Kopulation derselben statt. Hierher gehört Chlorococcum humicola Rb. (Cystococcus humicola Näg.), die grüne Überzüge auf feuchter Erde, an Baumstämmen u. a. bildet und häufig als Nährpflanze von Flechtenpilzen auftritt. Andre Gattungen dieser Familie, wie Chlorochytrium Cohn, Phyllobium Kl. u. a., leben als Raumparasiten in dem Gewebe von Pflanzen oder Tieren. Bei der Familie der Pleurokokkazeen fehlen die Schwärmsporen; die Kolonien entstehen durch vegetative Teilung einer ursprünglichen Mutterzelle. Der häufigste Vertreter dieser Gruppe ist Pleurococcus vulgaris Menegh. (Protococcus vulgaris Ktz.), der ebenfalls in grünen Überzügen auf feuchter Erde, an Baumstämmen u. dgl. auftritt und oft mit Flechtenpilzen in Symbiose lebt. P. nivalis, s. Sphaerella.
