Progression

Progression (lat.), Fortschreitung, fortschreitende Steigerung. Wenn man sagt, daß eine Größe (wie z. B. die Bevölkerung eines Landes oder die Staatsschulden) in arithmetischer oder in geometrischer P. wächst (abnimmt), so meint man damit, daß sie wächst (abnimmt) wie die Glieder einer arithmetischen oder einer geometrischen Reihe. Früher bezeichnete man zuweilen die arithmetischen und die geometrischen Reihen als Progressionen im Gegensatze zu anders gebildeten Reihen (s. Reihe).
