Platter, Thomas, Gelehrter, geb. 10. Febr. 1499 zu Grenchen bei Visp in Wallis von armen Eltern, gest. 26. Jan. 1582 in Basel, diente in seiner Jugend als Ziegenhirt, kam zu einem Pfarrer in die Lehre, durchzog mehrere Jahre hindurch Deutschland als fahrender Schüler, wandte sich in Zürich der Zwinglischen Reformation zu, lernte aber dann das Seilerhandwerk und ward Seilergeselle in Basel, zugleich Professor des Hebräischen an der Universität. Später ward er zum Professor des Griechischen am Pädagogium und zum Korrektor in der Druckerei des Dr. Heerwagen ernannt. 1535 errichtete er eine eigne Druckerei nebst Buchhandlung in Basel, verkaufte aber das Geschäft, um 1541 die Leitung der städtischen Schule zu übernehmen. Seit 1578 warer in Ruhestand versetzt. – Sein Sohn Felix P., geb. 1536, gest. 1614, ward im Pädagogium zu Basel erzogen, studierte 1552–1557 in Montpellier Arzneikunst, promovierte in Basel zum Doktor der Medizin, ward einer der angesehensten Ärzte, dessen Ruhm weitverbreitet war, 1571 Stadtarzt und zugleich Lehrer an der Universität. Beide haben Selbstbiographien (hrsg. von D. A. Fechter, Basel 1840, und van Heman, Gütersl. 1882) hinterlassen (die erste reicht bis 1572, die zweite bis 1559), die nicht nur für die Kulturgeschichte des Reformationszeitalters von großer Wichtigkeit sind, sondern sich auch durch naive und anmutige Darstellung auszeichnen. »Thomas Platters Leben« gab auch Düntzer (Stuttg, Kollektion Spemann), die Briefe an seinen Sohn Felix gab A.
