Piaggia (spr. pjaddscha), Carlo, ital. Afrikareisender, geb. 1827 in Badia di Cantignano bei Lucca, gest. 17. Jan. 1882 in Afrika, kam 1851 nach Tunis, 1852 nach Alessandria, wo er verschiedene Handwerke betrieb, ging 1856 nach Chartum, von wo er wiederholt die Länder des Weißen Nils bereiste, 1860 mit Antinori den Bahr el Ghazal befuhr und 1863–65 ins Land der Niam-Niam vordrang. 1871 besuchte P. zum Teil mit Antinori die Bogosländer, schloß sich 1872–73 Munzinger an, erforschte 1876 mit Gessi den Albertsee und zog den Somerset-Nil aufwärts bis zum Ibrahimsee, 1881 bereiste er die Gallaländer, starb aber schon in Karkodj (Senaar). Er veröffentlichte außer Reiseberichten im »Bollettino« der Italienischen Geographischen Gesellschaft: »Dell' arrivo fra i Niam-Niam e del soggiorno sul lago Tzana in Abissinia« (Lucca 1877). Vgl.
