Pergolēsi (Pergolese), Giovanni Battista, Komponist, geb. 3. Jan. 1710 in Jesi bei Ancona, gest. 16. März 1736 in Pozzuoli, bildete sich seit 1717 auf dem Konservatorium dei poveri di Gesù Cristo in Neapel, namentlich unter Gaetano Grecos, später unter Durantes und Feos Leitung, und schrieb noch als Schüler sein Drama sacro: »San Guglielmo d'Aquitania«. 1732 trat er mit großem Beifall mit der Oper »Salustio« auf, der das Intermezzo »La serva padrona« folgte. Im ebengenannten Jahre komponierte er eine zehnstimmige Messe nebst Vesper für zwei Orchester und bis 1735 noch folgende Opern: »Il frate innamorato«, »Il prigioniere superbo«, »Adriano in Siria«, »Il Flaminio« und das Intermezzo »Livietta e Tracollo«. Da seine Oper »Olimpiade«, die er 1735 in Rom schrieb, durchfiel, kehrte er nach Neapel zurück, um seine Kräfte der geistlichen Musik zu widmen. Hier schrieb er auch seinen Schwanengesang, das »Stabat mater«, das ihm europäischen Ruf verschaffte. Von hoher Schönheit sind auch seine Triosonaten, welche das kantable Allegro in die Kammermusik einführten. Wenige Tage nach Vollendung dieses Werkes starb er. 16 Jahre nach seinem Tode gelangte sein obenerwähntes Intermezzo »La serva padrona« zu historischer Bedeutung, denn ihm dankten die italienischen Buffonisten, die 1752 in Paris gastierten, jenen ungewöhnlichen Erfolg, der die Franzosen zur Schöpfung einer nationalen komischen Oper antrieb.
