Peele

Peele (spr. pīl), George, engl. Dramatiker, einer der unmittelbaren Vorläufer Shakespeares, wurde 1579 Magister der freien Künste in Oxford, dann Stadtpoet in London, führte dort in der Art damaliger Theaterdichter ein etwas genialisches Leben und starb daselbst, noch nicht 40 Jahre alt, um 1597. Er hinterließ fünf Stücke: »The arraignment of Paris« (gedruckt 1584), »The battle of Alcazar« (nachweisbar seit 1591), »Edward I.« (1593), »The old wive's tale« (1595) und »Love of King David and Fair Bethsabe«, sein Hauptwerk (erst 1599 gedruckt), sowie einige Gelegenheitsgedichte. Ob er auch das Ritterstück »Clyomon and Clamydes« verfaßte, ist unsicher. P. besaß eine für seine Zeit seltene Herrschaft über Sprache und Form; dagegen ist der Aufbau der Handlung bei ihm gewöhnlich sehr lose. Ausgaben seiner Werke besorgten Dyce (Lond. 1838, 3 Bde., sowie mit den Werken von Greene in 1 Bd. 1861) und Bullen (1888, 2 Bde.); eine Auswahl R. Noël in der »Mermaid series«. Vgl.
