Avila, 1) Juan de, genannt der Apostel Andalusiens, als Prediger, Seelenführer und asketischer Schriftsteller berühmt, geb. zwischen 1494 und 1500 zu Almodavar del Campo (Erzb. Toledo), gest. 10. Mai 1569 zu Montilla in Andalusien. Seine Werke erschienen zu Madrid 1618, zuletzt 1792–1805; deutsch (von Schermer) Regensburg 1856–81, 6 Bde.

2) Gil Gonzalez d', span. Geschichtschreiber, geb. um 1577 in Altkastilien, gest. 25. April 1658, wurde Jesuit u. Kanonikus zu Salamanca, auch königlicher Historiograph für Kastilien u. Indien. Seine Hauptwerke sind »Teatro de las grandezas de Madrid« (Madr. 1623), »Historia de la viday hechos del rey Don Henrique III de Castilla« (das. 1638), »Historia de la vida y hechos del monarca Don Felipe III« (in Mendozas »Monarquia de España«, Bd. 3, das. 1770) und »Historia de Salamanca« (Salam. 1606).
