Oakland

Oakland (spr. ōkländ), Hauptstadt der Grafschaft Alameda des nordamerikan. Staates Kalifornien, malerisch am Ostufer der 11 km breiten San Franciscobai gelegen, Endpunkt der Central Pacificbahn, San Francisco gegenüber, mit dem große Dampffähren es verbinden, hat ein theologisches Seminar, eine Militärschule, Frauenhochschule, das Chabot-Observatorium, Industrie in Sägeholz, Jute etc., große Docks, Kornspeicher, starken Küstenverkehr und (1900) 66,960 Einw. Damit verwachsen sind südlich davon Alameda (s. d.), nördlich Berkeley (s. d. 2).
