Nyassaland

Nyassaland (Njassaland), früher Makolololand, heute Britisch-Zentralafrika im engern Sinne, begrenzt von Deutsch-Ostafrika und Kongostaat (Norden), Kongostaat und dem übrigen Britisch-Zentralafrika (W.), Portugiesisch-Ostafrika (S. und O.), in das N. am Schire weit nach Süden eingreift. Genaueres s. Britisches Zentralafrika-Protektorat. N. wird nicht von der Südafrikanischen Gesellschaft, sondern unmittelbar vom Auswärtigen Amt in London durch einen Kommissar verwaltet. Am Nyassasee hatten Araber früher den Handel (mit Sklaven und Elfenbein) ausschließlich in Händen. Sitz der Verwaltung ist Zomba (Samba) oder Domasi am Schire, andre europäische Niederlassungen sind Fort Johnston, Maguire, Livingstonia, Port Herald, Tschiromo und Katunga; Haupthandelsplatz und Zentralstelle der schottischen Mission ist Blantyre.
