North, 1) Frederick, Lord N., Graf von Guilford, brit. Staatsmann, geb. 13. April 1733, gest. 5. Aug. 1792, trat 1754 in das Unterhaus, wo er das Interesse der Regierung gewandt verteidigte, wurde 1759 jüngerer Lord des Schatzes, mußte aber 1765 mit Eintritt des Ministeriums Rockingham zurücktreten. Doch wurde er schon 1766 im Ministerium Grafton wiederum Zahlmeister der Armee und 1767 Kanzler des Schatzamtes. Bei der Auflösung des Kabinetts 1770 übernahm er unter den schwierigsten Umständen das Staatsruder und wußte sich bald populär zu machen, indem er das Schicksal Irlands linderte, die Ostindische Kompanie der Oberaufsicht der Krone unterstellte und die Verfassung Kanadas einer Revision unterwarf. In dem Streit mit den amerikanischen Kolonien über das Recht des Mutterlandes, sie zu besteuern, verstand er sich zwar zur Aufhebung der meisten auferlegten Zölle, hielt aber, auf den Wunsch des Königs, um so hartnäckiger an dem Teezoll und damit an dem von den Kolonien verabscheuten Prinzip fest und machte dadurch ihren Aufstand unvermeidlich. Indem er unter maßlosen Schwierigkeiten den Kampf gegen die Kolonien und ihre Verbündeten führte, hielt er seine Politik lange gegen eine von den beiden Pitts, Fox, Burke und andern glänzenden Geistern geleitete parlamentarische Opposition aufrecht, bis er endlich, da das Unterhaus jede fernere Bewilligung verweigerte, 20. März 1782 von der Verwaltung zurücktrat. Im April 1783 verband er sich mit Fox und übernahm in dem sogen. Ministerium aller Talente das Departement des Innern. Schon 18. Dez. 1783 mußte indes die Koalition einer neuen, von Pitt geleiteten Verwaltung weichen. Der Tod seines Vaters gab ihm, der bald nach 1787 erblindet war, 1790 die Peerswürde und den Sitz im Oberhaus.
