Newcastle (spr. njūkáßl), 1) Stadt in der kanadischen Provinz Neubraunschweig, am Miramichi, oberhalb Chatham, großen Schiffen zugänglich, an der Bahn Halifax-Quebec, mit Schiffbau, Fischerei, Holzhandel und (1901) 2507 Einw. – 2) Hauptstadt der Grafschaft Lawrence in Pennsylvanien, nördlich von Pittsburg, am Zusammenfluß des Neshannock und Shenango zum Beaver, Bahnknotenpunkt, hat schöne, schattige Straßen, Kohlengruben und Naturgasquellen, 10 große Eisen- und Stahlwerke (1900 mit 3320 Arbeitern und 15,123,463 Doll. Produktionswert), Maschinen- und Glasfabriken etc. und (1900) 28,339 Einw.-3) Stadt in der gleichnamigen Grafschaft des nordamerikan. Staates Delaware, am Delawarefluß, 10 km unterhalb Wilmington, mit Baumwoll- und Ackergerätfabriken etc. und (1900) 3380 Einw. – 4) Hafenstadt in dem britisch-austral. Staat Neusüdwales, an der Mündung des Hunter (s. d.) und Ausgangspunkt mehrerer Bahnen, ist Sitz eines deutschen Vizekonsuls, hat große Docks, Werften und (1901) 14,250 Einw. N. ist nach Sydney der wichtigste Hafen des Staates, von dem aus sämtliche Produkte des Hunterbezirks, namentlich Steinkohle (1900: 3,02 Mill. Ton.), ferner Wolle, gefrornes Fleisch, Pferde, Talg, Kupfer etc. ausgeführt werden. Die Einfuhr betrug 1900: 680,250, die Ausfuhr 2,185,047 Pfd. Sterl., der Schiffsverkehr 1542 Schiffe von 2,161,026 T., ohne Küstenschiffahrt.
