Neath

Neath (spr. nīth), Stadt (municipal borough) in Glamorganshire (Wales), 10 km oberhalb der Mündung des gleichnamigen Flusses in die Swanseabai des Bristolkanals, mit mehreren Kirchen (darunter der alten gotischen Thomaskirche), Grafschaftsgebäude (seit 1888), Rathaus im klassischen Stil, einer Stiftungsschule, Kupferschmelzen, Fabrikation von Blech und Chemikalien, Eisengießerei, lebhaftem Handel und (1901) 13,720 Einw. N. wurde an Stelle der römischen Station Nidum erbaut. Dabei die Ruinen eines Schlosses und einer Cistercienserabtei (12. Jahrh.). Das Tal der N. enthält schöne Wasserfälle (besonders beim Dorfe Pont-Neath-Vaughan).
