Mainland

Mainland (spr. mēnlǟnd), 1) die bedeutendste der Shetlandinseln, gebirgig (im Rona oder Rooeneß 450 m hoch) und mit sehr zerrissener Küste, 86 km lang, bis 34 km breit, ist meist von Heidekraut bedeckt, bietet aber auch Weideplätze und fruchtbare Täler dar und hat (1891) 19,741 Bewohner (58,6 Proz. weiblichen Geschlechts). Hauptort ist Lerwick (s. d.). – 2) Orkneyinsel, s. Pomona.
