Asunción, 1) (Nuestra Señora de la A., Assumção) Hauptstadt von Paraguay, am Fluß Paraguay, unter 25°16´ südl. Br., 1536 gegründet, Ausgangspunkt der Eisenbahn nach Villa Rica, ist Sitz eines Bischofs und eines deutschen Berufskonsuls, mit Kathedrale, Kongreßhaus, großartigem, aber unvollendetem Palast des Diktators Lopez, schönem Bahnhof, mehreren Klöstern, höherer Schule und etwa 70,000 Einw. Fast der ganze Handel des Staates konzentriert sich in A. Mit Buenos Aires, Montevideo und Cuyabá besteht Dampferverbindung; 1891 liefen 1194 Dampfer und 754 Segelschiffe von 161,486 Ton. aus. – 2) S. Ciudad de la Asunción.
