Linnell, John, engl. Maler, geb. 16. Juni 1792 in London, gest. 20. Jan. 1882, studierte bei J. Varkey, malte schon von seinem 15. Jahr an Landschaften, zwischen 1824 und 1838 auch eine große Anzahl guter Bildnisse, sodann fast ausschließlich Landschaften. Von der Nachahmung Gainsboroughs ausgehend, gelangte er schließlich zu voller Originalität. L. legte das Hauptgewicht auf den Himmel, die Wolken und das Spiel des Lichtes; seine Gemälde verbinden Anmut und naturgetreue Auffassung mit trefflicher Behandlung. Das Viktoria und Albert-Museum besitzt eine Wiese mit blumenpflückenden Mädchen, die Nationalgalerie die Holzschläger und die Windmühle. Vgl. Story, Life of John L. (Lond. 1892, 2 Bde.).
