Leptōthrix

Leptōthrix Kg., Pilzgattung der Schizomyzeten, charakterisiert durch sehr kleine, farblose, durch Zweiteilung sich vermehrende Zellen, die zu unverzweigten, sehr dünnen und langen, zylindrischen, undeutlich gegliederten Fäden verbunden sind. Sie finden sich sehr häufig mit Bakterien und andern Schizomyzeten zusammen in Flüssigkeiten oder auf feuchten organischen Körpern, die in Zersetzung begriffen sind. L. buccalis Rob., gerade oder gekrümmte, gegliedert e, farblose Fäden sowie auch Kokken- und Zooglöaformen bildend, lebt auf dem Epithelium der menschlichen Mundhöhle und wird von einigen als Ursache der Zahnfäule (Zahnkaries) angesehen. L. gigantea Hill. findet sich an den Zähnen vieler Haustiere. Die zu den Eisenbakterien (s. Bakterien, S. 288) gehörige L. ochracea Kütz. tritt ähnlich wie Crenothrix polyspora Cohn (s. d.) bisweilen massenhaft als Schädling in der Brunnenflora eisenhaltiger Wässer auf.
