Ascension

Ascension (engl., spr. ässénnsch'n, Himmelfahrtsinsel), 88 qkm große, zu Afrika gerechnete britische Insel im Atlantischen Ozean, unter 7°55´ südl. Br. und 14°23´ westl. L., ward am Himmelfahrtstag 1501 von dem Portugiesen Juan de Nova Gallego entdeckt und daher A. benannt. Sie besteht durchaus aus jungvulkanischem, fast vegetationslosem Gestein. Nur am Green Mountain (835 m), mit der einzigen, aber sehr ergiebigen Quelle der Insel, findet sich üppige Vegetation. – A. wurde 1815 von den Briten besetzt, um den auf St. Helena gefangen gehaltenen Napoleon I. zu bewachen; auch paßte die Insel als Proviantdepot für das zur Unterdrückung des Sklavenhandels bestimmte Geschwader, und da das Klima alle Stufen vom heiß tropischen bis zum kühl gemäßigten in den höhern Teilen aufweist, so wurde hier eine Gesundheitsstation angelegt. Seit 1881 ist A. nur noch Kohlenstation. Der einzige Ort, Georgetown, an der Nordwestseite, hat (1859) 140 Einw., bestehend aus der Garnison, einigen Frauen und afrikanischen Dienern, die England 8000 Pfd. Sterl. Jahresausgabe verursachen.
