Ascŏli Piceno, Hauptstadt der gleichnamigen ital. Provinz (s. oben), auf einem Hügel über dem Tronto, 166 m ü. M., an der Flügelbahn A-Sambenedetto gelegen, hat ein antikes römisches Tor, eine schöne Kathedrale (an der Stelle eines Herkulestempels), ein Gymnasium, Lyzeum, eine technische und eine Ackerbauschule und (1901) als Gemeinde 28,882 Einw., die Seide, Öl, Papier, Wagen etc. herstellen. Die Stadt ist Sitz eines Bischofs und eines Präfekten. – A. hieß im Altertum Asculum und war die Hauptstadt der Picentiner (daher Asculum Picenum), unter den Römern ein Munizipium. 90 v. Chr. gab A. durch die Ermordung des Prokonsuls Q. Servilius das Signal zum Bundesgenossenkrieg und wurde deshalb durch den Konsul Pompejus Strabo (89) niedergebrannt, erholte sich aber bald wieder. Das mittelalterliche A. wurde 1242 von Friedrich II. eingenommen und geplündert und kam später unter päpstliche Herrschaft.
