Languedoc [2]

Languedoc (spr. langh'dóck), ehemalige Provinz Südfrankreichs, umfaßte die Landschaften Lauragais, Carcassez, Rasez, Gévaudan, Velay und Vivarais, war in Ober- und Nieder-L. eingeteilt und hatte ein Areal von 41,500 qkm (754 QM.). Hauptstadt war Toulouse. Jetzt ist die Provinz in die Departements Ardèche, Aude, Gard, Hérault, Lozère, Oberloire, Obergaronne und Tarn geteilt. Der Name L. rührt von der Bezeichnung der provenzalischen Sprache als Langue d'oc her (s. Französische Sprache, S. 27). Vgl. Devic und Vaissete, Histoire générale du L.
