Arrowsmith

Arrowsmith (spr. árro-ßmith), Aaron, engl. Kartograph und Hydrograph, geb. 14. Juli 1750 zu Winston in Durhamshire, gest. 23. April 1823 in London, war der Sohn eines Pachters und anfangs zu gleichem Beruf bestimmt, widmete sich später der Mathematik und Geographie und gründete 1770 in London einen Kartenverlag, aus dem zahlreiche Atlanten und Karten hervorgingen, darunter die Weltkarte nach Mercators Projektion 1790, die große Karte von Schottland 1807 und der »General Atlas« 1817. – Sein Neffe John, geb. 23. April 1790 in Winston, gest. 2. Mai 1873, trat in seines Onkels Geschäft und hat sich durch den »London Atlas of universal geography« (1832–37), durch Schulkarten und Karten zu neuern Reisewerken ebenfalls einen Namen als Kartograph erworben.
