Kent, 1) William, einer der Begründer der neuern engl. Gartenkunst, geb. 1685 in Yorkshire, gest. 12. April 1748 in Burlington, war Kutschenmaler, widmete sich dann in Rom der Malerei und ging auf Veranlassung Lord Burlingtons zur Architektur über. Er baute den Venustempel zu Stowe und den Palast des Grafen Leicester zu Holkham in Norfolk. Namentlich aber bemühte er sich um die Übertragung der Regeln der Landschaftsmalerei auf die Gartenkunst und verlangte, daß der Garten nichts andres sei als eine idealisierte Landschaft, deren Charakter mit dem der Umgebung übereinstimmen müsse. Er legte für die Königin Karoline den Garten zu Kensington, für den Prinzen von Wales den Park zu Charltonhouse an, am bekanntesten wurde er durch den Garten von Claremont (1725–35). Später wurde er erster Maler des Königs und Oberbaumeister.

2) James, hervorragende juristische Autorität Nordamerikas, geb. 31. Juli 1763 zu Fredericksburg im Staate New York, gest. 12. Dez. 1847 in New York, war zuerst Anwalt, 1793–98 Professor der Rechte am Columbia College, dann Oberrichter des Staates New York und seit 1814 Kanzler des höchsten Gerichtshofs daselbst. Sein klassisches Hauptwerk sind die »Commentaries on American law« (New York 1826–30, 4 Bde.; 14. Aufl. von O. W. Holmes, Boston 1896; Ausgabe von Lacy, Philad. 1889, 4 Bde.). Vgl. W.
