Kent, Grafschaft in England, die Südostecke des Landes bildend, grenzt nördlich an die Grafschaften London und Essex (durch die Themse davon geschieden) und an die Nordsee, östlich an den Kanal von Dover, südlich an Sussex, westlich an Surrey und umfaßt 4027 qkm (73,2 QM.) mit (1901) 1,348,841 Einw. (335 auf 1 qkm), als Verwaltungsbezirk mit 936,240 Einw. Hauptstadt ist Maidstone. – K. hieß das erste der angelsächsischen Königreiche in England, das um 450 gegründet und 823 mit Mercia verbunden wurde. Das Land wird seit alten Zeiten in fünf Bezirke (lathes) geteilt, deren jeder früher seinen eignen Gerichtshof hatte. Verschiedene Teile der Grafschaft erfreuen sich auch noch jetzt gewisser Freiheiten und sind der Autorität der Grafschaftsbeamten nicht unterworfen. Diese sind: Rochester, die Cinque Ports, die Romneymarsch, Maidstone und Canterbury, das 1888 besondere Grafschaft (county borough) wurde. Vgl. Bevan, Handbook to the county of K. (7.
