Karlstad

Karlstad, Hauptstadt des schwed. Läns Wermland, liegt an der Eisenbahn Stockholm-Christiania, auf der vom Klarelf kurz vor seiner Mündung in den Wenersee gebildeten Tingvallaö, ist seit dem Brande von 1865 neu und regelmäßig gebaut und hat (1903) 13,579 Einw. K. ist Sitz eines Bischofs, hat ein Lehrerseminar, eine eisenhaltige Quelle, Industrie in Eisen und Zündhölzern und lebhaften Handel in Holz und Eisen. Sein Hafen steht mit den Orten am Wenersee und mit Gotenburg in Dampferverbindung. K. wurde 1584 angelegt.
