Kapok

Kapok (Ceibawolle), das seine seidige Haar, das in der Frucht von Ceiba pentandra (Eriodendron anfractuosum) die Samen umgibt, aber nicht wie die Baumwolle von diesen ausgeht, sondern den Geweben der Frucht zuzuzählen ist. Der Baum wächst in Indien und auf dem Archipel, aber auch im tropischen Afrika, in Mexiko und auf den Antillen, und das Haar gelangt als Pflanzendune, unter welchem Namen indes auch das Haar einiger Bombax-Arten verstanden wird, in den deutschen Handel. Man benutzt K. als Polstermaterial und zur Füllung von Schwimm- und Rettungsgürteln. Es übertrifft in bezug auf Tragkraft alle andern bisher verwendeten Materialien (gepreßter K., 1 g auf 40 ccm, trägt das 36–37fache des eignen Gewichts, trocknet leicht nach der Benetzung und gewinnt seine ursprünglichen Eigenschaften vollständig wieder). Auch in der Chirurgie wird K. benutzt.
