Ingelow

Ingelow (spr. inndschelō), Jean, engl. Dichterin, geb. 1820 in Boston (Lincolnshire), gest. 20. Juli 1897 in London, trat 1850 mit »A rhyming chronicle of incidents and feeling« auf, dem Erzählungen: »Tales of Orris« (1860), und ein oft aufgelegter Band Gedichte: »Round of days« (1863) folgten. Seitdem hat sie in Vers und Prosa viel für Zeitschriften geschrieben und weiter selbständig veröffentlicht die Dichtungen: »Home thoughts and home scenes« (1865), »A story of doom, and other poems« (1867), »Mopsa the fairy« (1867, 5. Aufl. 1891) und »Little wonder-horn« (1872); ferner die Romane: »Off the skelligs« (1873, 4 Bde.), »Fated to be free« (1875), »Sarah de Berenger« (1880), »Don John« (1881) u. a. Ein dritter Band Gedichte erschien 1885, eine Sammlung ihrer »Lyrical and other poems« 1886, »Poetical works« 1898. Sie konnte mit ihren spätern Gedichten zwar nicht mehr den großen Erfolg ihrer ersten erreichen, blieb aber zeitlebens beliebt, besonders durch ihre Seedichtungen.
