Indra, ind. Gott, in der vedischen Zeit der gefeiertste von allen, vorwiegend ein Kampfesgott, der im Kampf mit dem schlangengestaltigen Dämon Vritra (ursprünglich Personifikation der Trockenheit) siegt und auch in der Männerschlacht Sieg gewinnt, daher das Ideal eines streitbaren Helden und der Liebling des um Wohnsitze und Herden kämpfenden Volkes. Zum Kampf stärkt er sich durch den Genuß des Göttertranks Soma. In der brahmanischen Zeit ist er, wie viele vedische Götter, zu einem der acht Welthüter herabgedrückt, und zwar als Hüter des Ostens. Er hat seinen prächtigen Sitz im Svarga (Himmel); seine Gemahlin ist Çatschî. Vgl.
