Huntingdon

Huntingdon (spr. hönntingd'n), 1) Hauptstadt (municipal borough) von Huntingdonshire (England), an der Ouse, hat mehrere alte Kirchen, ein neues Rathaus, eine Lateinschule (in welcher der hier geborne Oliver Cromwell erzogen wurde), ein uraltes Krankenhaus, ein literarisches Institut (mit Bibliothek und Museum), einen Rennplatz und (1901) 4261 Einw. Die Stadt hat Brauereien, Kornmühlen, Patentziegelbrennereien, Baumschulen und lebhaften Handel. In der Nähe des Bahnhofs liegt Hinchingbrook, der schöne Landsitz des Earl von Sandwich (mit interessanten Porträten), H. gegenüber Godmanchester (2017 Einw.), vielleicht das römische Durolipons. – 2) Hauptort der Grafschaft H. des nordamerikan. Staates Pennsylvanien, am Juniatafluß in einer an Eisen, Blei, Kohle, Ton, Kalk und Holz reichen Gegend, hat eine Normalschule, Fabriken und (1900) 6053 Einw. Die Stadt liegt an der Stelle des »stehenden Steins«, wo die Indianer jahrhundertelang ihre Versammlungen abhielten.
