Howrah

Howrah (Haora, H aura), Hauptstadt des gleichnamigen Distrikts (1233 qkm mit [1901]850,514 Einw.) in der britisch-ind. Provinz Bengalen, am rechten Ufer des Hugli, Kalkutta gegenüber und mit ihm durch eine Schiffbrücke verbunden, bis zu der Seeschiffe kommen, während oberhalb eine lebhafte Flußschiffahrt beginnt, Kopfstation der bis zu den westlichen Provinzen reichenden East India-Bahn, hat 4 Schulen für Europäer und Eurasier, eine Ingenieurschule bei der Vorstadt Sibpur, einen botanischen Garten und (1901) 157,847 Einw., zum größten Teil Hindu neben Mohammedanern und ein paar Tausend Christen. H. bildet einen industriellen Vorort Kalkuttas und hat große Jute- und Baumwollfabriken.
