Hopetoun (spr. hōp-taun), John Adrian Louis Hope, siebenter Graf von, britisch-austral. Staatsmann, geb. 25. Sept. 1860 zu Hopetoun in Schottland, folgte 1873 im Peerage, unternahm 1881/82 größere Reisen, trat 1883 ins Oberhaus, war 1885 bis 1889 königlicher Kammerherr, 1887–89 Oberkommissar der schottischen Kirche und 1889–95 Gouverneur der australischen Kolonie Victoria. 1895–1898 war H. Generalzahlmeister im dritten Kabinett Salisbury, 1898–1900 Lord-Oberkammerherr und wurde im Juli 1900 zum ersten Generalgouverneur der neugegründeten Vereinigung der australischen Kolonien, des Commonwealth of Australia, designiert. Dies Amt verwaltete er 1. Jan 1901 bis 14. Mai 1902, wo er wegen unzureichenden Gehalts zurücktrat. Sein Nachfolger wurde, nach Erhöhung des Gehalts, im November 1902 Lord Hallam Tennyson.
