Hatherley

Hatherley (spr. hädhĕrlĭ), William Page Wood, Lord, brit. Staatsmann und Rechtsgelehrter, geb. 29. Nov. 1801, gest. 10. Juli 1881, studierte in Genf und Cambridge, wurde 1827 Sachwalter und war 1847–52 Mitglied des Unterhauses, wo er sich der liberalen Partei anschloß. 1849–51 war er Vizekanzler des Herzogtums Lancaster, 1851–52 Solicitor general und bekleidete darauf das hohe richterliche Amt des Vizekanzlers. 1868 trat er als Lord-Kanzler in das Ministerium Gladstone und wurde zum Peer und Baron H. erhoben. Im Oktober 1872 legte er sein Amt nieder. Politisch liberal, gehörte H. zur kirchlich-orthodoxen Partei; er schrieb: »Continuity of Scripture as declared by the testimony of our Lord« (5.
