Grant Duff

Grant Duff (spr. grännt döff), Sir Mountstuart Elphinstone, engl. Politiker, geb. 21. Febr. 1829 als Sohn von James Cummingham G. von Eden (bei Banff in Schottland), Verfasser einer »History of the Mahrattas« (1826, 3 Bde.), studierte in Oxford, ward 1854 Advokat in London, 1857 als Anhänger der Liberalen ins Parlament gewählt und im Dezember 1868 von Gladstone zum Unterstaatssekretär des indischen Amtes ernannt, welches Amt er bis Februar 1874 innehatte. Er war 1866–72 Lord-Rektor der Universität Aberdeen, trat 1880 in Gladstones Ministerium als Unterstaatssekretär der Kolonien ein und war 1881–86 Gouverneur von Madras. 1889–93 war er Präsident der Geographischen, 1892–99 Präsident der Historischen Gesellschaft von England. Er veröffentlichte außer einer Sammlung seiner RedenElgin speeches«, 1871): »Studies on European politics« (1866); »A political survey« (1868); »Notes of an Indian journey« (1876); »Eastern question« (1876); »Miscellanies, political and literary« (1878); »Foreign policy, a lecture« (1880). Seine unter dem Titel »Notes from a diary« herausgegebenen Denkwürdigkeiten reichen in 12 Bänden (Lond. 1897–1904) vom Jahre 1857 bis zum Jahre 1895.
