Geikie

Geikie (spr. gīkī), 1) Sir Archibald, Geolog, geb. 28. Dez. 1835 in Edinburg, studierte daselbst, wurde 1855 der Geological Survey beigegeben und lieferte viele, namentlich auf Schottland bezügliche geognostische Untersuchungen. Er bearbeitete mit Murchison eine Darstellung der geognostischen Verhältnisse Schottlands und gab mit diesem auch 1861 eine neue geologische Karte des Landes heraus. 1867 wurde er Direktor der Survey of Scotland, 1870 Professor der Mineralogie und Geologie in Edinburg, und 1881–1901 war er Generaldirektor der Geological Survey des vereinigten Königreichs und Direktor des Museums für praktische Geologie in London. 1891 wurde er geadelt. Er schrieb: »The story of a boulder« (Lond. 1858); »The life of Professor Edw. Forbes« (1861, mit Wilson); »The phenomena of the glacial drift of Scotland« (1863); »Scenery of Scotland viewed in connection with its physical geology« (1865, 3. Aufl. 1901); »Elementary lessons in physical geography« (4. Aufl. 1884; deutsch von Gerland, Straßb. 1893); »Outlines of field geology« (5. Aufl. 1900); »Geological sketches at home and abroad« (1882); »Text-book of geology« (4. Aufl. 1903, 2 Bde.) und »Class-book of geology« (4. Aufl. 1902); »Sir R. Murchison, and a sketch of the rise and growth of palaeozoie geology in Britain« (1875, 2 Bde.); »Memoir of Sir Andrew Crombie Ramsay« (1895); »The ancient volcanoes of Great Britain« (1897, 2 Bde.); »The founders of geology« (1897); »Scottish reminiscenses« (1904). Auch gab er eine neue geologische Karte von Schottland (1892) und von England u. Wales (1898) mit Erläuterungen heraus.

2) James, Geolog, Bruder des vorigen, geb. 23. Aug. 1839 in Edinburg, war 1861–82 in der geologischen Landesuntersuchung von Schottland tätig, wurde dann Professor der Mineralogie und Geologie zu Edinburg und 1890 Präsident der Geologischen Gesellschaft. Er schrieb: »The great ice age« (1874, 3. Aufl. 1894); »Prehistoric Europe, a geological sketch« (1880); »Outlines of geology« (4. Aufl. 1903); »Fragments of earth-lore« (1893), »Earth sculpture, or, the origin of land-forms« (1898, 2. Aufl. 1902). Er ist Mitherausgeber des »Scottish Geographical Magazine« und machte sich auch als Übersetzer bekannt mit »Songs and lyrics by H. Heine, etc.« (1887).
