Geertz, Julius, Maler, geb. 21. April 1837 in Hamburg, gest. 21. Okt. 1902 in Braunschweig, begann seine künstlerischen Studien unter den Brüdern Günter und Martin Gensler in Hamburg und ging später nach Karlsruhe, wo Descoudres sein Lehrer wurde. 1860 kam er nach Düsseldorf, trat hier in das Atelier von R. Jordan und ging 1864 nach Paris, wo er die Werke alter Meister studierte, und von da nach der Bretagne und Holland. Dann ließ er sich in Düsseldorf nieder, wo er teils ernste, teils humoristische Genrebilder aus dem Volksleben und dem Treiben der Jugend malte, von denen der Verbrecher nach der Verurteilung seinen Ruf begründete. Ernstes Streben nach charakteristischer Lebenswahrheit, gute Zeichnung und treffliche Farbe sowie häufig ein köstlicher Humor zeichnen seine Werke aus. Von seinen andern Bildern sind hervorzuheben: Zerniert und Kapituliert, zwei heitere Kinderbilder; Folgen des Schularrestes; der Fliegenfänger; die Dorfschule; Wacht am Rhein; Kriegsgefangene; das Mädchen mit dem Vogelnest; Kampf des Wilderers mit dem Förster; der Dorfheld; der Bettelpfennig; Morgengebet. In neuerer Zeit hatte er sich auch der Bildnismalerei (Kaiser Wilhelm II., Karl Schurz) zugewendet. 1897 nahm er seinen Wohnsitz in Braunschweig.
