Galton

Galton (spr. gaolt'n), Francis, engl. Reisender und Schriftsteller, geb. 1822 in Birmingham, studierte Medizin und ging 1846 auf Reisen, zunächst nach Nordafrika, dann 1850 mit K. I. Andersson (s.d.) von der Walfischbai aus in das Innere von Südafrika. Nach seiner Rückkehr lebte er in London und war 1885–88 Präsident des Anthropologischen Instituts. Er schrieb: »Narrative of an explorer in tropical South Africa« (1853, neue Ausg. 1890; deutsch, Leipz. 1854); »Art of travel, or shifts and contrivanées in wild countries« (1855, 5. Aufl. 1872); »Hereditary genius, its laws and consequences« (1869, neue Ausg. 1892), sein Hauptwerk; »English men of science, their nature and nurture« (1874); »Inquiry into human faculty and its development« (1883); »Natural inheritance« (1889); »Finger prints« (1892) u. »Decipherment of blurred finger prints« (1893); »Finger print directories« (1895).
