Gallon, engl. Hohlmaß für trockne und flüssige Dinge, = 4 Quarts zu 2 Pints. Das Imperial Standard G. stellt laut Parlamentsakte vom 17. Juni 1824 den Raum dar, den 10 Pfd. avdp. destillierten Wassers bei 30 Zoll Barometerstand und 162/3° Luftwärme einnehmen, = 4,543458 Lit. Eines G. älterer Art bedienen sich Großbritannien und Irland seit 1826 nicht mehr, wohl aber britische Kolonien, Holländisch-Westindien und die Vereinigten Staaten von Nordamerika für Flüssigkeiten, und zwar des Wine G. von 231 Kubikzoll = 3,78544 Lit. (amerikan.), seltener des Ale G. von 282 Kubikzoll = 4,621 Lit.; 6 Weingallonen rechnet man gewöhnlich = 5 neue Gallonen. Ein Gallone ionio = 1 Imperial G.; in Uruguay ist der Galón zwar nicht gesetzlich, aber = 3,805 Lit. gebräuchlich, in Peru kleiner. Für Trockenwaren bedeutet ein G. in Nordamerika 1/8 Bushel = 4,405 Lit., in Französisch-Vorderindien 12 Mark als = 35,895 Lit.
