Ambala (Umballa), Hauptstadt der gleichnamigen Division der britisch-ind. Provinz Pandschab, liegt unter 50°21´ nördl. Br. und 76°52´ östl. L. in weiter Ebene an der Eisenbahn nach Simla, hat (1891) 79,270 Einw., darunter viele englische Kaufleute, mir lebhafte Ausfuhr von Getreide, Baumwollenwaren und Teppichen. Seit der Besetzung durch die Engländer steht hier eine starke Garnison (2 Regimenter Infanterie, 2 Regimenter Kavallerie, 3 Batterien). – Die Division A., am Fuße des Himalaja, ist 10,261 qkm groß und umfaßt die Distrikte A. (1891: 1,033,427 Einw.), Ludhiana und Simla sowie die kleinen Cissatledsch-Hügelstaaten.
