Amarapūra (»Götterstadt«), alte Residenzstadt des ehemaligen Königreichs Birma, links am Irawadi unter 21°57´ nördl. Br. und 73°4´ östl. L. gelegen, hat einen verfallenen Palast, große Zitadelle und den Tempel Maha-Mjat-Mamii mit 250 reich vergoldeten hölzernen Säulen und einer Kolossalstatue Buddhas; sonst sind die Gebäude meist aus Bambus. A. wurde 1783 neu gegründet und zählte 1810: 170,000 Einw., 1855, nachdem sie erst durch eine Feuersbrunst, dann (1839) durch ein Erdbeben gelitten, 26,670, mit Vorstädten 90,000 Einw. 1860 siedelte der Hof nach Mandalai über, und A. verfiel gänzlich. Jetzt hat es etwa 7000 Einw.
