Folkestone (spr. fōkstön), Stadt (municipal borough) in der engl. Grafschaft Kent, an der Straße von Dover (Pas de Calais), liegt teils in einem engen Tal, über das ein großartiger Eisenbahnviadukt führt, teils westlich davon längs der Küste, hat 14 Kirchen, ein wissenschaftliches Institut (nach Harvey, der hier geboren wurde, genannt), eine höhere Technische Schule, das Viktoriahospital, ein Genesungsheim, Seebäder, einen hübschen Kursaal (seit 1869), schöne Promenaden und (1901) 30,650 Einw. Die Stadt verdankt ihren Aufschwung dem sichern Hafen, der 1345 von der Eisenbahngesellschaft gebaut wurde, und besitzt 12 Schiffe von 2232 Ton. 1901 liefen 2126 Schiffe mit 398,783 T. ein (täglich kommt ein Dampfer von Boulogne an). Die Einfuhr vom Ausland belief sich 1900 auf 13,623,199 Pfd. Sterl., die Ausfuhr auf 1,780,622 Pfd. Sterl. worunter für 1,051,092 Pfd. Sterl. britische Produkte. Eingeführt werden Seidenwaren (für 6,4 Mill. Pfd. Sterl.), Wollwaren (1,3 Mill. Pfd. Sterl.), Baumwollwaren, Wein (11,641 hl), Leder; zur Ausfuhr kommen vornehmlich Wollwaren, Häute und Eier. – F. bestand schon im 9. Jahrh.
